Misurata is a city in northwest Libya situated 210 km to the east of Tripoli at the southern edge of the Gulf of Sidra. With a population of approx. 650,000, Misurata is the third largest city in Libya after Tripoli and Benghazi. The city is famous for its fertile lands and a large Iron and Steel plant employing more than 6000 employees. Since the 1970s Misurata has witnessed many large construction projects thus attracting a huge labour force. It is regarded as one of the best designed cities in Libya.
The city dates back to the tenth century BC when the Phoenicians established a trade centre on the north western part of the Libyan coast. So for 3000 years it has been a major trade and commercial hub in Libya. In olden times the city was known by the name Cephale Tobactus.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, Italy’s attempted invasion of Libya stimulated political consciousness among the Libyan population. The first republican government formally created in the Arab world in 1918 was known as the Tripoli Republic. As major world powers did not recognize this Republic, it was dissolved in 1923.
